Small settlements and catfishing existed in the South Lake Okeechobee area when a principal influx of settlers came following the big freeze in 1917 and following World War I. The first church services in the Belle Glade area were "community churches" not denominational. Lacking a preacher, Sunday School was started in 1919 by the settlers who assembled under the custard apple trees. Later that year meetings were held in the school building that was built. A church house was later built at Canal and S.W. 2nd Street.
In 1920, Rev. Edwin L. Housley arrived in South Bay to conduct services there, in Belle Glade, Okeelanta, Canal Point and Ritta Island. Rev. Housley had for ten years been a missionary in the Philippines. He and his wife walked from South Bay to Belle Glade for services, later a motor boat was provided.
The church building was destroyed in the hurricane on September 11, 1926.
With interest in starting a Missionary Baptist Church in the area, 16 people met in the home of Walter Greer on June 30, 1933. The group then met in the Legion Hall until permission to use the school house for Sunday Services was secured.
On October 18,1934, the church voted to build a tabernacle. Due to the large growth in attendance a need for more classrooms led to a building program. On September 22, 1963 a dedication service was held for the new educational building. Rev. Robert H. Atkins was called as pastor in September of 1975. Under his leadership the Recreation Building was built. The original pastor's home that was being used as the church office was removed making room for a large modern church building with auditorium, offices, classrooms, library and parlor. This new building was dedicated on June 2, 1985.
